Farécla Bonnet Painting Competition (2019) - Meet the Finalists #5: Ben

Meet the Finalists: Ben Witford

Ben is one of five finalists in the Farécla Apprentice & Student Bonnet Painting Competition (2019).

Ben, at 17, is the youngest of all the finalists, but his talent for car painting is already shining through at Apollo in Portsmouth.

Ben joined the bodyshop industry after being encouraged by his school to attend an Open Day that the Apollo Motor Group, had organised. “I like painting and my school said that Apollo were looking for apprentices,” said Ben. “I went to the Open Day and really enjoyed it, so I applied for an apprenticeship with Apollo, and it went from there.”

Ben is in his first year of apprenticeship and is really enjoying the trade and says how supportive his employer is. His love of motorbikes was the inspiration for his car bonnet design in the competition. “It’s a vintage motor bike, and rather than just put the Farécla logo on, I thought I would make their G3 polish, the petrol tank.”

It took Ben about two weeks to do, and unfortunately, once completed when he took it into work it got scratched so he had to spend more time to do an invisible repair, which again shows his skill.

When asked what he would do with the £1,000 first prize money if he were to win, Ben said: “I’d put money towards a new car or motorbike and probably take my missus shopping – I like to keep her happy!”
