Meet the Finalists: Poppy Merrin-Gregory

Poppy is one of five finalists in the Farécla Apprentice & Student Bonnet Painting Competition (2019). She is 22 years old and has been at Bedford College for two years.

“I originally applied to be a mechanic because that is what I thought I wanted to do and they said we don’t have any spaces for a mechanic but we have a place in the bodyshop if you are willing to try it," said Poppy. "I am so glad I did because I actually prefer it to being a mechanic. It is a much more satisfying job.”

Poppy took her inspiration for her intricate design from the fact that Farécla HQ is based in Ware and she knew that the crest for Hertfordshire is a deer. “I wanted to incorporate different skills within the bonnet as one so I had the marbling and fine-lining and the airbrush skills.”

Asked what she would do with the money if she won first prize, she said that first of all she would buy each of her mentors a bottle of Jack Daniels and take her parents out for a meal because they have been very supportive.

“And the rest of the prize money… I need to spend money on my car,” she said.
