Our science-based targets for 2030 and 2050

We are committed to improving the sustainability of our products and organisation as a whole and have the following science-based targets.

For 2030
on scope 1 + 2

(absolute emission reduction vs. 2017)

Scope 1

Direct emissions from owned or controlled sources.

Scope 2

Direct emissions from owned or controlled sources.

For 2030
on scope 3

(absolute emission reduction vs. 2017)

Scope 3

All emissions (not included in scope 2) that occur in the value chain of the reporting company, including both upstream (transportation, purchase, assets) and downstream emissions (waste, emissions generated through the usage of sold products) with the usage of the product/service. It can represent up to 80% of whole company’s CO2 emissions.

For 2050

Mitigating climate change means decarbonizing our economies. The goal is simple: by 2050, we must not emit any more carbon than we absorb. We must be carbon neutral. Our net zero carbon ambition is also a very concrete manifestation of our purpose, Making the world a better home.

Saint-Gobain made this commitment on September 23, 2019 in New York, signing the UN Global Compact’s "Business Ambition for 1.5°C" pledge. As we make progress towards our 2050 goal, we strive to make each of these interim efforts more ambitious - with commitments to reduce carbon in more areas of the business, moving from incremental improvements to significant step changes, being also able to offset during this period the potential increase of our emissions due to growth.

Solar power

We’ve been using solar power to help reduce our carbon footprint since 2016 and our panels generate approximately 20% of our electricity needs. The remainder of our electricity is sourced from renewables via the national grid.

Our other commitments

In addition to these scope 1, 2 and 3 targets, we are committed to reducing the volatile organic compounds in our products and have multiple products already live in the market that are virtually VOC-free, such as Profile 350 Premium Liquid and G360 Finish.

We are also committed to increasing the circularity of our packaging, and have introduced and continue to work on the following initiatives:

  • Migrating away from non-recyclable co-extruded plastic packaging on our mainline yellow bottle in favour of HDPE bottles that can be recycled
  • Increasing the amount of recycled content in our packaging. All of our pots now include 30% recycled content and we working hard on introducing recycled content to our bottles
  • Removing bleaching from our outer cartons and using as much Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) approved sources as possible
  • Migrating away from plastic packaging on our range of applicators in favour of cardboard packaging
