Sustainability Drives Farécla Shift To Non-Bleached Carton Board

The latest initiative within Farécla’s ongoing commitment to a more sustainable future is the company’s steady switch away from white bleached outer cartons to unbleached cartons (see examples in photograph below). This switch not only reduces the carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) footprint associated with their manufacture, but also avoids the use of environmentally harmful bleaching agents..

FSC Certification

Alongside this change, the cartons used on the production lines at the Farécla manufacturing site in Ware are now produced using Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) materials. FSC certification verifies the sustainable sourcing of forest products. All of the other carton specifications remain unchanged, so performance is not impacted.

James Lambert, sustainability lead at Farécla, explains more:

“These changes to our cartons sit within a range of sustainability initiatives undertaken in 2022 for which Farécla was recognised with a gold award by Ecovadis, the world’s largest and most trusted provider of business sustainability ratings. Whilst it’s true that some of the other initiatives, such as switching to 100% renewable electricty at our Ware site, may have had a bigger impact on the CO2 footprint of the Farécla company as a whole, the carton changes are highly visible to our customers, and every step counts on the journey to net zero.”

Our commitment to sustainability

The wide range of sustainability initiatives at Farécla includes but is not limited to:

  • Switching to electricity from 100% renewable sources including a large onsite solar array
  • Increasing the circularity of product packaging – more recycled and recyclable materials
  • Reducing the use of plastics
  • Reducing the volatile organic compounds in product formulations
