Round 6 of the Club 100 championship took Team G3 up to Whilton Mill in Northamptonshire. It was a beautiful day for racing; although with temperatures soaring to a high of thirty four degrees the team were in for a long and very hot day!
The competition was tight, with a matter of seconds separating the top fifteen drivers in qualifying! Team G3 qualified in a well deserved 7th place, and setting the fastest lap in their class made the boys confident that the elusive podium finish they have been after was in their sights!
Team member Matt Hale was really pleased with the final race: “We were on the pace, overtaking, and really making progress”. However it wasn’t long before disaster struck and the sweltering heat was the least of the team’s problem. In the second half of the race, the kart’s chain snapped, “to suddenly have mechanical failure was devastating” commented Matt.
The team tried to stay positive: “sometimes mechanical failure just happens” said Matt, “there was a weak link that just snapped, and there was nothing we could do.” The incident is to be investigated, but that doesn’t soften the blow for the team who lost 10 laps; a gap they couldn’t close. From then on things went from bad to worse; Barry was crashed into and taken off track, and Matt sprained his wrist. Matt, Barry and Stewart watched yet another podium finish slip through their fingers.
Despite their run of bad luck, the team remains as positive and confident as ever for their next race at Buckmore Park in Kent on the 10th of August. Last time they were there it was snowing, so the team will be thankful for a dry race! Matt said that the team are “still confident in their strategy and tactics, and hopefully with a problem free race, some silverware will be on the cards,” but until then the hunt continues!
