Three in a row for Team G3pro
Team G3pro and Team Farécla ventured into the unknown at Red Lodge Raceway in Suffolk to compete in round three of the national championship.
G3pro drivers Matt Hale and Barry Luetchford have started the 2015 campaign in an impressive manner with back-to-back victories during the opening two rounds of the championship. Both drivers were full of confidence despite never having visited Red Lodge track before, and had a firm belief in their driving abilities and a solid race strategy for another podium finish as the target for the race.
During qualifying, the team held in the pits waiting for the ideal moment to go out on track. Barry was behind the wheel and, having qualifying duties for the second time this year, he managed to clock an impressive string of hot laps together to clinch his first pole potion for the team this year and the second pole position for the team in only three races. Barry said: “We timed that perfectly – we managed to find some clear air on track which enable me to get into to the groove quickly, Matt let me know what target times I needed to achieve to be towards the sharp end of the grid, and fortunately I was able to match those times. To start on pole is ideal but not easy to achieve with 36 other teams gunning for the same starting position, so I was delighted with the result.”
The race start was fairly clean, with Barry managing to pull out a two-second advantage on the opening lap. This gap only grew with Barry behind the wheel as he continued to power round the 1.2 kilometre circuit and eventfully he was able to extend the team’s lead by a further eight seconds before the first of five pits stops.
As the race unfolded, Team G3Pro set about extending their advantage with both drivers setting a blistering pace to extend the gap to 45 seconds over second place team. However, in true G3pro style, it couldn’t go without drama. Barry was out for his final stint when he collided with a back marker whom he had been battling to get past for the previous few laps. During the collision Barry spun off the track and came to a halt, but fortunately managed to get going again and lag just 10 seconds behind the new race leaders. The final stint of the day was down to Matt who had a case of déjà vu from the previous round. Fortunately again he was able to regain the lead quickly and cross the line to take victory and to make it a hat-trick of wins for Team G3pro.
Matt said: “We weren’t expecting to win at this track, but an amazing qualifying session from Barry really gave us the advantage which we eventually needed. Again our strong strategy and quick race pace ultimately proved to be enough to secure our third win of the season. Our pit stops made all the difference with help from our sister team Farécla, plus we also some had help from the guys at Koks Racing so a big thank you to both those teams. Again, chasing down the leaders at the end of the race was pretty exciting, and this time round I knew what I had to do and it was pretty straight forward until I crossed the line.”
Three in a row for G3pro…can the team start dreaming of Championship glory? Well not quite – seven rounds to go and only a few points split them from their closest rivals. It’s still early days in the championship. Now we set our focus firmly on round 4 at Whilton Mill.
