Jack makes solid start to BTCC 2014!
After an exhilarating weekend at Brands Hatch, we catch up with Team BMR and they tell us all about Jack’s first round of racing.
We have finally made it to the opening rounds of the BTCC 2014, and what a season it is set to be with 7 former champions & a capacity 31 car grid! Pre-season testing had gone well and the whole team were full of optimism heading into the first weekend.
In free practice, Jack showed great form and posted the second quickest time of the session, just 0.01 off Jason Plato! Going into qualifying however, he had issues with the car which dropped him down to p15 at the flag. This really put him on the back foot heading into Sunday’s races.
In race 1, Jack made a good start but got pushed wide by Fabrizio Giovanardi heading out of Druids on lap 1; this also allowed Dave Newsham to get past. As the race wore on the pace returned to his car and he managed to chip away at the cars ahead, getting back past Giovanardi, Newsham and also Adam Morgan’s new Mercedes A Class. He ended the race in p12 and was encouraged by the speed of his Vauxhall Insignia.
Race 2 saw Jack pick up some damage on the opening lap, which did not help prolong the life of the soft tyre he had nominated to race with. Even so Jack managed to fend off Jason Plato and his team mate Sam Tordoff to secure p10 at the finish. This was not the end of race 2 however, as confusion under the safety car meant that Jack was to receive a 4 place grid penalty dropping him back to 14th.
For race 3, Jack was back to his preferred medium compound tyres. As the lights went out he held position into turn 1, but after that his car really started to come alive. Moving past car after car and overtaking reigning champion Andrew Jordan to move up into p8, he then went about closing in on the front group. He succeeded, but unfortunately caught them a lap too late as he was on the bumper of p7 on the last lap. Still finishing in p8 was a very promising end to the weekend; a solid top 10 finish!
Overall, Jack and the car showed great race pace. Roll on Donington Park!
