Place: Farecla Products Ltd, Ware
Date: 02 June 2014
Subject: Prove that Farecla G3 Professional Colour Restorer brings back shine to a faded paint and restores it permanently. Compare Farecla G3 Professional Colour Restorer with T-Cut’s product.

I. Project background

Oxidisation, age, neglect and a lack of protective polish or wax will undermine paintwork, leaving it dull and flat. This is especially true if the car is painted with a solid red paint or any colour in cellulose. Red paint pigments are notorious for oxidising. The cure for dull paint is to abrasively remove the oxidised layer, exposing the shiny nice paint beneath. Other techniques mask a dull colour with shiny or coloured chemicals.

Previously, the best way to achieve a professional shine was by using an electric mopping pad in conjunction with a cleaning compound. In recent years, products have reached consumers making a pro shine achievable using cloths and sponge pucks.

Good colour restorer restores oxidised or previously flatted paint or gel coat finishes to a gloss finish permanently.

II. Instructions for Colour Restorer test

Based on: International Standard ISO 2813, “Paint and Varnishes-Measurements of Specular Gloss of Nonmetallic Paint Films at 20°, 60°, and 85°” (International Organization for Standardization 1978) and Standard Test Method for Specular Gloss, ASTM D532,” American Society for Testing and Materials, West Conshohocken, PA (1995).

  1. 1. Prepare red painted panel by removing a top layer using P1200 abrasive sandpaper.
  2. Thoroughly wash the panel as by using a degreasing agent or Isopropyl Alcohol.
  3. Rinse off and dry.
  4. Measure gloss of painted panel before application by using a gloss meter. Always take measurements from five different areas to calculate the average number later.
  5. Divide the panel by using masking tape into 2 similar sized areas.
  6. Apply one product to each area by following directions on the product label. Avoid any recommendation from the label about using next product to enhance the shine. This test is for a single paint remover product purposes only.
  7. Repeat point 5 again by using the same product in the second application.
  8. Measure gloss of painted area after application. Always take measurements from five different areas to calculate the average number later.
  9. Wash the panel with Shampoo by using a soft sponge. Rinse out any shampoo residue with tap water and wipe off with a soft Micro Fibre cloth.
  10. Provide gloss measurement as per 4 and 8 before.
  11. Wash the panel with Shampoo second time by using a soft sponge. Rinse out any shampoo residue with tap water and wipe off with a soft Micro Fibre cloth.
  12. Provide gloss measurement as per 4 and 8 before.
  13. Finally use a degreaser or Isopropyl alcohol to remove any paint renovator’s product residue from the painted panel. Rinse with tap water and wipe off with a soft Micro Fibre cloth.
  14. Provide gloss measurement as per 4 and 8 before.

IV. Result:

a) Test confirmed that Farecla G3 Colour Restorer brings back shine to a faded paint and restores it permanently.
b) Farecla G3 Colour Restorer gives the better permanent result in glossy finish surface compared to T-Cut Original Colour Restorer.
c) Gloss measurement (ASTM D523) at 60° angle shows that G3 Colour Restorer gives 3x better gloss than T-Cut Original Colour Restorer.

Measurement angle refers to the angle between the incident and reflected light. Three measurement angles (20°, 60°, and 85°) are specified to cover the majority of industrial coatings applications. The angle is selected based on the anticipated gloss range, as shown in
the following table.
(From Measurement / Angle selection http://www.gloss-meters.com/GlossIntro2.html)

Gloss Range 60° Value Notes
High Gloss >70 GU If measurement exceeds 70 GU, change test setup to 20°
Medium Gloss 10 – 70 GU
Low Gloss <10 GU If measurement is less than 10 GU, change test setup to 85°
    1. Trigloss 20/60/85° version measurement was chosen for maximum accuracy. Matt Finish
85°, Mid Gloss 60°, High Gloss 20°. A measurement proportional to the amount of light
reflected from a surface in a different angle.
