Black Flags at Whilton Mill
Just like the Team G3’s last Club100 race at Whilton Mill, the second race of the season was a blisteringly hot day with temperatures just as high as the team’s anticipation!
After morning testing, the trio felt comfortable and re-familiarised themselves with the circuit. Yet again, 1.2 seconds separated the top drivers in qualifying, with Team G3 managing a 12th place start (second in class).
Team member Matt Hale was back behind the wheel having missed the first round of the season. He said: “I started the race but it didn’t go quite to plan as I found myself forced onto the grass halfway around the first lap, resulting in a drop of six places. Spurred on, I managed to regain the lost ground and we found ourselves in fourth position after the first round of pit stops.”
From then on, Team G3 was at the sharp end of the action, maintaining fourth position overall and second in class. After 90 minutes and despite Stewart being taken out by a fellow racer, the team were on for a podium! But that all changed when Barry found himself on the wrong side of the marshall and his decision to give a black flag for advantage by contact (ABC). We disagreed with the decision, but you can judge for yourselves by watching the race highlights here >>>>GoPro Footage<<<<.
Regardless of the setbacks, the team still managed to finish 5th in class. Although this didn’t mean a podium, they still lead the championship going into round three at Clay Pigeon in Dorset on Sunday. It’s one of the team’s favourite tracks and their strategy is to again try and qualify well, and keep out of trouble in the opening laps. The team also hope to benefit from extra track testing in the morning and Matt, Barry and Stewart go into the race in high spirits, building on their strong start to the season.
