A Solid Finish from Newcomer Andy Wilmot
It was Andy Wilmot that stepped into Tom’s shoes – or his VW Passat in this case – last weekend at Rockingham. Aged 33, he’s already been with Team HARD for 3 years and has shown his racing skills in the VW Cup. Having always aspired to get into the BTCC, this weekend gave him the opportunity to move into the next league of his career and he was eager to perform during the races.
A jump up in challenge, Andy still gave a good performance, qualifying in P21 and scoring two P18 and one P20 in the subsequent rounds. It was an exciting weekend for Andy, who has said: “I loved every minute of it! The Passat is completely different to what I drive in the VW Cup. I have come from a short wheel base, right hand drive and low brake horsepower. The Passat is the opposite and was completely alien to me, but we have a handle on it a little now I think.”
Tony Gilham was pleased with his performance and said: “I always knew that the BTCC was [Andy’s] dream, so when the opportunity came the car was there. He is a very capable driver but we weren’t expecting miracles. However he did a solid job and performed professionally whilst enjoying it all the way.”
The next race weekend is the penultimate round of the BTCC and will be held at Silverstone on 29th September. Latest developments are that newly signed Aiden Moffat will be next to step into the VW Passat, and will carry until the end of the season
